Francisco Jiménez closes in on the Spanish Hill Climb Championship podium
Isla de Ibiza hill climb
Just five points separate Francisco Jiménez from third place in the Category 1 overall standings of the Spanish Hill Climb Championship after his fourth place at the Isla de Ibiza hill climb.
The Balearic event, the penultimate round of this season's national championship, took place on 15, 16 and 17 October in highly changeable weather that made life particularly difficult for drivers and teams. On Saturday afternoon heavy rain fell during the first practice runs, but the tarmac was dry along most of the course by the time the race run that closed the day was held.
With four powerful GT cars on the entry list, fifth place, first among the TC group vehicles, seemed the best result the driver from Rute (Córdoba, Spain) could hope for in his Mitsubishi, sponsored by Indusmetal Torres, Proquisur, Cruz, the Córdoba Provincial Council and Rute Town Council. However, the difficult conditions on the course made mistakes hard to avoid. Jiménez made none and finished Saturday fourth in the Category 1 overall standings, leading the TC group by a wide margin.
On Sunday the rain returned, but it was shorter, very intermittent and less intense than the day before. Once again, the consistency of the Córdoba driver and the strong performance of his EVO X, prepared by Plemar Sport, saw Jiménez finish fourth in Category 1 in the two remaining race runs, ending in the same overall position and taking first place in the TC group with a lead of more than thirty seconds.
The result in Ibiza brings the Córdoba driver, already champion of the Spanish Cup in Class 4a, to within just five points of third place in the Category 1 Spanish Championship, with only one round left before the end of the season: the Les Revoltes d'Ibi hill climb. The event in Alicante takes place this coming weekend, 22, 23 and 24 October, and Jiménez will aim to round off a magnificent season with the extra reward of finishing among the top three in the championship's most competitive category.
